Haley's Helpful Hints

As summer temperatures climb, staying indoors isn’t just more comfortable for your dog, it’s also much safer. But just because your pup isn’t running around outside doesn’t mean they can’t stay happy, engaged, and active. With a few creative tweaks, you can turn hot afternoons into cool opportunities for enrichment and bonding.

Start by creating a chill zone for your dog to relax in. A quiet area with a fan or good airflow works great, especially if you add a cooling mat or lay down a damp towel for them to lie on. Most dogs love lounging on tile or hardwood floors, so don’t be surprised if they stretch out near the bathroom or kitchen. You can even freeze a water bottle, wrap it in a towel, and place it nearby for some extra cooling comfort.

Mental enrichment is key to keeping dogs happy indoors. Simple activities like a “find it” game, where you hide treats around a room as it can work your dog’s brain and nose at the same time. If you have a snuffle mat or puzzle feeder, mealtime becomes a fun challenge rather than just a bowl of food. Lick mats or frozen toys filled with banana, peanut butter, or canned food also offer a soothing, low-energy activity, especially helpful for anxious dogs or those needing downtime.

Frozen treats are another great way to help your dog beat the heat. You can make dog-safe popsicles using plain yogurt and fruit purée, or freeze low-sodium broth with bits of kibble or carrots inside. Stuffing a Kong or Toppl with your dog’s favorite mix and freezing it overnight turns snack time into a cool adventure.

Indoor time doesn’t have to mean nap time all day. A few short training sessions throughout the day, even just five minutes of sit, stay, touch, or come can help your dog stay sharp and feel connected to you. Mix in a little playtime and some well-earned snacks, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a calm, cool summer day.

Stay cool and keep those paws happy,
