Haley's Helpful Hints

As summer begins and daily routines shift, it’s important to remember that your dog feels those changes too. From school breaks and family vacations to longer days and warmer weather, the season often brings a different rhythm to the household and dogs thrive on consistency. Helping your dog adjust to a new schedule smoothly can make a big difference in their comfort and behavior.

Start by making changes gradually. If your walk times or feeding schedules need to shift, do so in small increments over several days. Sudden adjustments can cause stress or even digestive issues, especially for dogs who are creatures of habit. During summer, one of the most critical considerations is the heat. Midday walks that were manageable in spring can become dangerous in high temperatures, so it’s best to move exercise sessions to the cooler early morning or evening hours. This also helps protect your dog’s sensitive paw pads from hot pavement, which can burn skin in minutes.

Travel is another common element of summer life. Whether you’re planning weekend getaways or longer trips, it’s helpful to prepare your dog in advance. Familiarizing them with their travel crate, car rides, and even short stays in new environments can make a big difference when it comes time to leave. Bringing along favorite toys or blankets can provide comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.

Hydration and rest are just as important as routine. Dogs may have less energy in hot weather, and their risk of dehydration or heat exhaustion increases significantly. Always offer fresh water and keep an eye out for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting or lethargy. Despite the changes in your schedule, try to keep some structure in place, particularly around feeding, potty breaks, and sleep. This consistency helps your dog feel secure, even when the rest of their world feels more flexible.

With a few mindful adjustments, your dog can enjoy the summer right alongside you; safe, happy, and well-adjusted to the season’s new pace.

Have a Paw-some Summer,
